This Saturday, Free Beer and A Clean Creek

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 2.07.04 PMMost days, Duluth Grill and the Brewhouse are competitors but even competitors can come together when there’s a need. Duluth Grill owner Tom Hanson was giving a tour to some school kids behind the restaurant at Miller Creek where the trout were spawning.

“They were like ‘eww, ish, there’s oil and shoes and cans,” Tom said. “That was the first thing they sensed—that those poor fish are living in all that garbage.”

Worse, that creek runs right into Lake Superior. So the Duluth Grill called Brad Nelson of Fitger’s Brewhouse, who has been doing creek cleanups with his group Brewhouse Hops To It for a couple of years.

“Obviously in our industry of brewing, water is supremely important,” Brad said. “Partnering with Duluth Grill sounds like a really cool thing to do.”

So this Saturday the 30th at , the Duluth Grill Rain Garden project is doing a cleanup of the creek behind the Grill in partnership with the Brewhouse Hops to It volunteer brigade. Brewhouse is providing t-shirts and free beer to volunteers and Duluth Grill will bring treats. This isn’t a one-off idea for either place, as Hops to It is involved in creek cleanups and beach sweeps and the Grill is actually building a full-on rain garden to soak up runoff. The next day, Sunday, we’re collaborating on a cleanup of Chester Creek.
